Scagliola is a composite substance made from selenite, glue and natural pigments, imitating marble and other hard stones. Scagliola looks just like marble but more adaptable and not so heavy. The material may be veined with colours and applied to a core, or the desired pattern may be carved into a previously prepared scagliola matrix.
Our company founder Lee John Richards trained in Florence, Italy with Alessandro Bianchi learning the ancient art of Scagliola and is widely considered to be a leading expert in both marezzo and traditional Scagliola.
The high standard of craftsmanship carried out by the company has been recognised by numerous awards, including the Plaisterers’ Trophy.
Scagliola is a beautiful and versatile artificial medium that can be produced in a wide range of forms and colours. It is a composite substance made from selenite, glue and natural pigments, imitating marble and other hard stones. It can be inscribed and inlaid with all different types of colours to any specific design.
The conservation of Scagliola intervention should only be attempted after non-invasive testing and close inspection. We recommend and offer a full condition survey which includes a visual inspection, sounding and historical research.
